While some gardening books focus on vegetables and how to grow them, others zero-in on herbs or fruit. Certain books even focus on specific gardening methods, like indoor gardening or hydroponics (growing plants using only water). Choose a book that covers what you want to learn.

Also consider how the book gives you the information that you need. Some gardening books are in an encyclopedia-like format, giving you a ton of information in an orderly fashion. Others have more pictures and illustrations to reference, which is helpful for visual learners.

Consider the Length of the Book

If you like learning about plants in detail, you may want to select a long gardening book. Encyclopedia-like ones often have descriptions and facts about plants aside from how to grow them, while others might even come with a few gallery pages for visual reference.

If you're just looking for important points, you can choose a shorter gardening book. Some lay out information in such a simple way that you won't even feel like you're reading a book! These ones may have less paragraphs, more bullet points, and a ton of step-by-step instructions in picture format.

Choose a Format That Works for You

If you like having a physical book, think about the binding. A paperback is easily bendable, so you can hold it in one hand while checking on your plants. Hardcover books, on the other hand, might be easier to prop up while you garden. This feature comes in handy if you need to follow a step-by-step process listed down in the book.

A digital format might be your thing, and that's a-okay. However, if you're going to be working with water, you may not want to risk taking your reading device with you to the garden! Consider spiral-bound books that let you turn a page completely and can be laid flat on the ground without creasing the pages.

Check the Author's Gardening Experience

It's reassuring to know that the author of the gardening book you choose actually knows what they're is talking about, so you may want to consider doing a quick background check on whoever wrote the book you're eyeing. For urban gardening books, for example, you may want to look for an author who lives in the city.
